When Chris and Misty came back down the stairs, it was close to ten. They couldn’t help but feel a tinge of Déjà vu. This time, however, they had a good idea of what was waiting for them out there in the swamp. Which lead to a sense of foreboding that seemed to cling to them as they made their way to the door.

Their parents had gone to bed early. In fact, they’d only come out of their room to make dinner and then went back, the door shutting heavily behind them. She didn’t even want to think about how devastated they’d be if they knew. Just thinking about it hurt her heart, especially since she knew that there was a good chance none of them would make it out of the swamp tonight.

Not if Mrs. Hernshaw got her way.

“Watch it.” Chris hissed as Misty’s left foot stepped on the one squeaky step on the bottom of the stairs, sending an echo throughout the house.

Misty immediately froze. Together, they listened as their dad groaned from upstairs. Then rolled over and went back to sleep. After a few more minutes, they continued and headed out of the house. Carefully closing the front door behind them.

“Hurry up!” Chris called over to her. He was already nearly to the shed.

Misty realized that she had stopped right in the middle of the front porch. Misty couldn’t remember ever being this scared in her entire life. The thought of going back out there filled her with her dread, so did the thought of their parents waking up to the news that both of them were gone.

Entering the shed, they both quickly donned the same pairs of muddy shoes they’d worn the night before. With everything going on, they had forgotten all about them, and now they were stiff and musty, crusted with dried mud, and still damp with swamp water.

She wanted to say something to Chris, maybe talk him out of it. But, one look told her it wouldn’t matter, they needed to go. It wouldn’t matter if they stayed home or went out to the swamp if they didn’t stop her now. Eventually she’d get them.

He didn’t say a word to her as he shouldered the backpack and handed her a flashlight. Without another word, he turned away from her and started heading down the path towards Travis’s house. Misty took one last look at their house, wishing that she were back in her bed, safe under the blankets, then she turned to follow him.

The moon wasn’t full tonight, a fact that coupled with the overcast, cloudy skies was making it harder to follow the path without the flashlights than the night before. Misty wanted to turn her’s on but didn’t want anyone else in the neighborhood knowing what they’re up to. With the news of Mikey’s death everyone would be extra vigilant. Walking closely together, they slowly found their way along the dark path.

It was eerily silent as they made their way up the path.
